In this area of the country, we recommend heartworm preventative year round, and even dogs on preventative should be tested annually. It is also helpful to minimize mosquito populations by ensuring your property is well drained and cleared of stagnant water.
What are heartworms?
- Heartworms are roundworms that live in the heart and lungs of mammals. They begin as a form of microfilaria, or worm larvae, living in the blood of mammals, and are spread by mosquitoes.
How do I know if my pet has heartworms?
- Pets with heartworms may have asthma-like symptoms, vomit, or have no signs at all.
- Dogs with heartworms will typically have a cough that worsens after exercise and may also become listless, lose weight and cough up bloody phlegm.
How are heartworms diagnosed?
- A blood sample is tested to determine if heartworms are the cause of your pet’s symptoms.
How are heartworms prevented?

My dog has been diagnosed with heartworms, what happens next?
- A chest x-ray determines the severity of infection, and tells us which course of treatment is needed. Your dog is then hospitalized to receive treatment. After 4 months a blood test is given, and if negative your dog is assumed to be free of heartworms. Previously infected dogs are put on protection to prevent additional infection.
